So for the last year or so I took on a bunch of freelance projects for the specific purpose of saving up some money to get the Canon 5D Mark II. Over the past few months, because of all the things going on with me, that kind of got put on hold, but was also complicated by recent rumors floating around concerning the Mark II’s hypothetical successor, the as yet unannounced Mark III.
In patience I decided to hold off on a purchase to see if something materialized, but all indications now point to a late 2012 release, if even then.
Fortunately, I was able to borrow my friends Alex’s Mark II for a day and instantly feel in love; even for a three year old camera it is an incredible piece of equipment. The warnings on Amazon.com about not renting or borrowing one are completely accurate.
Fast forward to last week. The price of the Mark II had been holding stable for the last three years, with little to no price reduction even given its long time on market. Even used models rarely went a couple hundred dollars below retail. Much to my surprise, several online retailers began offering a nearly $500 reduction in price for the Mark II body, which finally seemed too good to pass up. BH Photo and Video even sweetened the deal by adding in a 16GB flash card and carrying case, and as such the temptation was far too great. Well, if you can call saving up money for a particular product that will now cost you less than you saved a temptation…
It was a with a smile on my face that I opened the cardboard box containing the camera of my dreams. Unfortunately, the supplied battery was dead on arrival, so I had to spend the rest of the day charging it. By the time I was able to snap some pics it was quite late at night, which meant having to boost the ISO quite a bit. Nevertheless, I was really happy with the Mark II’s high ISO handling (one of the reasons to get the camera in the first place) so it was a nice first test of a really nice camera. Here are a couple pics I managed to pull together right before I went to bed.
BTW… BH Photo and Video is still running the special, so grab it while you can, if you are in the market for that sort of camera.
